Eating Disorders &
Disordered Eating

A Weight-Inclusive Perspective

Eating disorders encompass a range of psychological conditions characterised by abnormal eating habits, thoughts, and behaviours.

Disordered eating, while not meeting the criteria for a diagnosed Eating Disorder, involves unhealthy eating behaviours and attitudes toward food, weight, and body shape.

Our team is led by Credentialed Eating Disorder Dietitians (CEDC-D). We play a crucial role in supporting individuals with Eating Disorders and disordered eating patterns. Our approach is rooted in compassion, understanding, and empowerment, focusing on the individual's overall well-being rather than solely on weight or food rules.

Understanding Eating Disorders and Disordered Eating

Eating disorders and disordered eating patterns can develop from a variety of factors, including genetic predisposition, psychological factors, societal pressures, and environmental influences.

Weight stigma and diet culture play significant roles in exacerbating these conditions, as they promote unrealistic ideals of thinness and equate worth with body size. Constant exposure to these harmful messages can lead to distorted body image, low self-esteem, and damaging coping mechanisms centred around food and movement.

Supporting individuals with Eating Disorders & disordered eating patterns

We focus on promoting body positivity, and encouraging self-care practices that nurture both the mind and the body. Clients learn to appreciate their bodies for what they can do, rather than how they appear, fostering a sense of accomplishment and self-acceptance that permeates all areas of life. Through our collaborative efforts, individuals not only recover from their Eating Disorders but also gain the tools and confidence to lead a fulfilling, empowered life free from the shadows of societal expectations and self-doubt.

A Note on Gut Issues and Eating Disorders/Disordered Eating

It's essential to recognise the intricate relationship between gut issues and eating disorders. Individuals with eating disorders may experience gastrointestinal symptoms such as bloating, constipation, or irregular bowel movements due to disrupted eating patterns and nutritional imbalances. Conversely, gastrointestinal issues can also contribute to the development or exacerbation of eating disorders. As dietitians, we're equipped to address these concerns and provide support to improve gut health while addressing the eating disorder.
