Tube Feeding

Tube feeding, also referred to as enteral nutrition, becomes essential when individuals cannot meet their nutritional requirements orally, for various reasons.

Tube Feeding

Tube feeding, or enteral nutrition, involves administering nutrition through a tube directly into the stomach or small intestines.

How can dietitians contribute to this process?

At Complete Dietetics, our team of dietitians (led by our director who is Credentialed in gastrostomy tube management) specialise in assisting tube fed clients to manage their nutrition and optimise their health status.

We manage a variety of tubes such as PEGs, PEJs, NGTs, and are experienced in a variety of tube feeding techniques such as via pumps or syringes.

We are also passionate about empowering YOU with choice around what you (or your child) are fed, we support individuals who utilise commercial formula and also those who choose to blend whole foods (ie Blenderised Tube Feeding- BTF).

How we support~

Transition Support: Navigating the shift from hospital care to home can be overwhelming. Our dietitians offer guidance and support to ease this transition, ensuring continuity of care and comfort for clients and their families.

1

Formula Selection and Customised Feeding Plans: Every individual has unique nutritional requirements. Our dietitians work closely with clients to select the most suitable formula (or blended whole food diet) and tailor a feeding regimen that aligns with their specific needs, ensuring optimal nutrition intake.

2

Adaptation to Health Changes: Medical conditions can evolve, requiring adjustments to the feeding regimen. Our dietitians monitor clients closely, making necessary modifications to the feeding plan to accommodate any health changes and ensure continued adequacy of nutrition.

3

Bowel Management: Bowel issues are common concerns among individuals on tube feeding. Our dietitians provide expert advice and strategies to manage bowel function effectively, promoting digestive health and comfort.

4

Transition to Oral Diet: For those transitioning from tube feeding to oral intake, our dietitians offer comprehensive support. We develop gradual transition plans, monitor progress, and provide guidance to ensure a smooth and successful transition to oral feeding.

5

Blenderised Tube Feeding: Some individuals may opt for homemade blended formulas which can offer safe and nutritionally adequate alternatives to commercial formulas. Our dietitians, guided by evidence-based practices, assist clients in formulating balanced homemade blends tailored to their specific dietary needs, providing reassurance and support throughout the process.
